Vegan Leather

MATERIAL PROFILE

Bio-based alternative to animal leather · Made in Italy

MATERIAL OVERVIEW

The vegan leather we use is a bio-based material developed by an Italian company with over 50 years of experience in technical materials for footwear and leather goods.

It's made from bio-polyols derived from non-food, non-GMO cereals, combined with textile supports from natural or recycled sources. It's not plastic pretending to be leather. It's a different material, engineered for durability and feel.

We use this material for the uppers of our Oxford and Derby shoes, where flexibility and finish quality matter most.

WHY WE USE IT

Finish Quality

This material accepts patina and polish like traditional leathers. It holds color, develops character over time, and maintains a consistent surface across production runs.

Structural Integrity
High resistance to humidity, pressure, and mechanical stress. The material holds its shape during lasting and doesn't deform after extended wear.

Workability
Our artisans can cut, stitch, and finish this material using traditional shoemaking techniques. No special equipment required. The material responds predictably.

Consistency
Unlike animal hides, our vegan leather has uniform thickness and density. No weak spots, no grain variations to work around. Every pair starts from the same baseline.

OUR VEGAN LEATHER VS. CALF LEATHER

Calf leather is the traditional benchmark for luxury footwear. Here's how our material compares.

PROPERTY OUR VEGAN LEATHER CALF LEATHER
Animal-derived No Yes
Material Consistency Uniform thickness and density Variable (depends on hide)
Water Resistance Inherently high Requires waterproofing treatment
Break-in Period Minimal Required (1-2 weeks typical)
Stain Resistance High Moderate (absorbs liquids)
Maintenance Required Low (no conditioning needed) Regular (conditioning, waterproofing)
Patina Development Subtle over time Pronounced with age
Breathability Good (engineered micropores) Excellent (natural fiber structure)

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT VS. CALF LEATHER

Life Cycle Assessment data comparing our vegan leather to chrome-tanned calf leather, according to ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards.

IMPACT CATEGORY OUR VEGAN LEATHER CALF LEATHER
Carbon Footprint (CO₂ eq/m²) ~7 kg ~17 kg
Water Usage (L/m²) ~50 L ~500 L
Land Use Minimal High (livestock grazing)
Acidification Low High (livestock emissions)
Eutrophication Low High (runoff from farms)
Chemical Processing Minimal Extensive (chrome tanning)

LCA data conducted cradle-to-gate. Calf leather impacts include livestock farming, slaughter, and tanning processes. Figures are industry averages; actual values vary by source.

Trade-Offs

We're honest about the trade-offs.

Breathability
Calf leather has a natural fiber structure that allows exceptional airflow. Our material is engineered to breathe, but it's not identical.

Patina
High-quality calf leather develops a rich patina over years of wear. Our material ages gracefully, but the character is different.

Tradition
Calf leather has centuries of shoemaking heritage behind it. Our material has decades. We're building that history now.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Cleaning
Wipe with a damp cloth. For deeper cleaning, use a mild soap solution and soft brush. Allow to air dry away from direct heat.

Conditioning
Our vegan leather does not require conditioning like calf leather. The material maintains its flexibility without oils or creams.

Storage
Store with shoe trees to maintain shape. Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Polishing
Standard shoe polish and cream can be applied for shine and color maintenance. Test in an inconspicuous area first.

OUR SUPPLIER

We source from an Italian manufacturer with over 50 years of experience producing technical materials for footwear, leather goods, furniture, and automotive.

Their facility runs on 80% solar energy. They recover 99% of solvents used in production. 60% of total waste goes to energy recovery.

We've visited the facility. We know the people. This matters to us.

Craft. Conscience. Stillness.
